This publication presents the results of training of future architectural professionals with practical skills in the digitization of the cultural and historical heritage during the five-year period from 2013 to 2018 by the studio Architectural Spies, working in the Science and Development sector. The training was of students of Varna Free University, the Technical University – Varna, and the University of Architecture, Construction and Geodesy. It was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. N. Stamatova within the framework of the Internship of the Students’ Practice Program of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education. The paper presents the work of producing 3D models from raster images, taken by digital camera from the human eye view perspective, and also from a bird eye view. It demonstrates the development of 123D Catch to ReMake (Memento), and from ReMake to ReCap. There are clarified practical questions about the shooting position, the lighting, the chosen season in regard to the vegetation, the depth of selected images, the elimination of the backgrounds before or after the 3D processing. Conclusions are supported by carefully chosen illustrations demonstrating the strong and weak points of the experimental software (good vs. bad examples). The studio, Architectural Spies, is in the process of creating a database for an Augmented Reality mobile application which will allow the visualization of destroyed cultural heritage buildings in the environment of the city of Varna, considering the practical lessons, learned during the Students’ Practice Program.
